1 | Algarve – an Overview

Anyone who thinks of the Algarve, probably Golden rock formations, fishing villages, beautiful sandy beaches and hidden coves in the head. I could not imagine me personally, however.

The Algarve is considered to be one of the most popular holiday regions of Europe and especially the South coast is meant to be. It extends not only over the whole of the South of Portugal, but extends also to the West coast to Odeceixe. Only then is the next Region of Alentejo follows.

We were in June in the Algarve and it was quite relaxed. This was according to the Locals, especially the weather, that was until shortly before our arrival, over a period of months rather poorly. Thus the tourists stayed away. To the most popular Spots but it was still a little full. Much more relaxed on the West coast, which is so very different. It is windy, rough, original, and much less visited. The cliffs fall still deeper into the sea and provide a breathtaking landscape and a lot of impressive beaches, which to me were consistently take your breath away. And even though I'm from the Seychelles as very spoiled. Portugal has impressed me in this respect, but very. The temperature is on the West coast by the way, much cooler. In the dress in Lagos started, I had in Arrifana suddenly a thick sweater.

2 | Algarve tips – the most beautiful beaches, places of interest & Highlights

We have concentrated in the Algarve on the South coast to the West of the Bengali cave and the entire West coast. Why? Because that is where the most spectacular rock cliffs, caves and the most beautiful beaches and we had only five days time. Also have written to me before many readers on Instagram (are you Following me yet?) and tell which places are really worth it. Nevertheless, the four days are not enough to see everything, but we have tried to see the Best.

{Algarve South Coast}

The South coast of the Algarve is the most popular holiday region and that is exactly what I imagined Portugal: Golden rock formations, caves, sandy coves, beautiful beaches and a pleasant climate. All of this makes them, however, to most touristic areas of the country. No wonder, hundreds of beaches and places waiting to be discovered.

If I have the choice between nature and city, then I prefer clearly the former. However, I do like it every once in a while in a small town on the way to. In the South of Portugal there are many small places that are worth it. A should miss in no case, is Lagos. Our accommodation was about 20 to 25 minutes inland, and we took advantage of our arrival day for this lovely place. Once through the small daily market, stroll, eat lunch, drink delicious coffee and eat some ice cream and then go through a few shops, not strolling, more than a couple of hours you need.

From the roof terrace of the restaurant Mare have there are probably the best views of the harbour area.

Ponta da Piedade

The Ponta da Piedade is located 4 km or 10 minutes by car from Lagos. It is considered to be one of the most spectacular rock formations of the Algarve with about 20 m high rocky cliffs, hidden coves and beautiful beaches. The sea currents formed the cliffs, the pillars, hidden caves, tunnels and gates – and this is really breathtakingly beautiful. Several stairs lead down to the Bay, and you can make it from there, even a boat ride. Even if we have abandoned it, is certainly a Highlight.

You should be here to many visitors to the set, as these famous rock format ions of the most popular attractions in the Algarve – come on therefore, best very early or very late. We were in the morning and then it went still.

Praia dos Três Irmãos

The Praia dos Três Irmãos is a beautiful Bay, which lies between the Golden rock at the Eastern end of the 6 km long sandy beach of Alvor. We have discovered you really purely by chance and immediately fell in love. From the Parking lot, you just go in an easterly direction to the left (if you look at the sea) and reach eventually the first rock. From there you can then go through some rocks and tunnels to the end of the Bay and also on the stairs on the rocky cliffs to climb.

Right at the beginning, a small snack bar with delicious coffee (see Restaurant tips) is located in the rocks. The small Restaurant is mainly for lunch is popular, and then it quickly becomes full. Therefore, you should come in before half 12.

And here is the Restaurant in the rocks – a dream, or?

Praia de Benagil

The Benagil cave is one of the most famous caves in the whole of Portugal. It is located on the southern coast of the Algarve, about 45 minutes East of Lagos on the beach of Praia de Benagil. From the outside you can not imagine that in the middle of the cliffs, a breathtaking spectacle of nature hides.

The cave is only accessible from the sea through two bulges to. At the top of the cave a huge hole through the whole day, the sun is shining and the gold colored color spectacle the second change is located. The climb to the cliffs is worth it. The hole is backed up on a large scale by a fence, but you have a really fantastic view.

You can reach the cave at the simplest, if you swim about 100 meters into the cave. That was not for us into question, however, because the sea in the Atlantic in June was really cold. Therefore, we rented a kayak, also SUPs there. Some have paddled with air mattresses in the cave. Stunning places such as this cave, unfortunately, have also the disadvantage that it is always very crowded. We were lucky and were initially the only ones, then it quickly became quite full.

Cave tour by boat

Also, some boat providers to the cave. An 8-caves-Tour we made to the sunset also. In a group of about 10 people, we went again with a small boat in a few caves. Disembarking, we were allowed to, but that did nothing. In part, the caves were completely dark and we had to move our heads. In addition, cliffs is from the sea again a completely different view on the rock.

We did the boat tour with Taruga Benagil Tours. The 30-minute trip (8 caves) costs 15 euros per Person. The providers you can find right in the Praia de Benagil.

Praia de Carvoeiro

This small picturesque town is nestled between Golden cliffs of the southern coast of the Algarve. Once a fishing village, has developed Carvoeiro today is a popular holiday destination. We got there quite spontaneously, because actually we were on the trip. But as it happens in the Algarve often and you should stop just where it looks pretty.

Hotels are you looking for in this place, as so often in the Algarve in vain. There are a lot of white houses arranged in tiers on the cliffs and the small town around it have settled. In addition to some Restaurants, Bars, ice cream parlours and cafes you can find there also a couple of small nice shops. If you are looking for a place where you just sit in a Café and a few shops can stroll, I can recommend these. More than 2 hours, you don't need here, however.
